considerable number of employees had been using the Internet to view adult
Web sites while at work. In order to achieve the delicate balance between
providing Internet access and policing Internet activity, Corporate Express
sought a solution that would allow human resource policies to be enforced,
without monitoring individual Internet activity.

competition, because it uses a more intelligent method to filter and

significant reduction in the amount of traffic attempting to access
inappropriate Web sites."
Opting not to monitor the Web activity of
its 10,000 current users and 8,000 future users, Corporate Express uses
Websense, integrated with Check Point Firewall-1, to block sites that are
incompatible with its acceptable Internet use policy. Rather, reports are
occasionally consulted for surges of activity that may require further
investigation and changes to the organization's policy enforcement.
Websense software educates and reminds
Corporate Express employees of the company Internet use policy - allowing
them to act as their own enforcement. Attempted access to prohibited sites
is met with warning that the site is not permitted by company policy, and
informs employees that continued attempts could potentially result in the
loss of Internet privileges. Empowering workers with knowledge of potential
policy violations enables employees - instead of Corporate Express
management - to regulate themselves.
